Looking back on the best of 2023 with afternoon host Rob Humphrey:

5. Mitski, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We: Mitski was born in Japan and grew up all over the world. As a child she lived in Turkey, China, Malaysia, the Czech Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo before settling in the United States. She has called her 7th album, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We, her “most American album” to date.

4. Chris Stapleton, Higher: On his fifth album, Higher, Chris Stapleton didn’t quite abandon the anthemic songs that he has become known for but they aren’t at the forefront. This album relies on the soulful side of his music and it’s all the better for it.

3. Bully, Lucky For You: Alicia Bognanno returned in 2023 with her fourth album, Lucky For You. The album is packed with the same raw emotion that powered her previous efforts with the added benefit of her maturation as a songwriter.

2. The Rolling Stones, Hackney Diamonds: Ronnie Wood is the youngest member of The Rolling Stones, at the age of 76. There is no reason that this band should have been able to make a rock n roll record this good at this point in their career.

1. Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Weathervanes: Described as “Life and death songs played for and by grown ass people.” Jason Isbell uses the songs on Weathervanes to comment on life, love, social issues and living in the south.
